The book is taken from the life of the author's great-great uncle. Blending original letters and fictionalised memoir, it tells a moving and unconventional love and coming of age story with an unexpected denouement. Revisiting a turbulent period in European history, its themes are highly resonant today. Offering a unique window on Wilhelmine German society, evolving later through Nazism, with a particular focus on the world of the theatre, the book is fascinating in its gender, social and political dimensions. Metoo, social polarisation, resurgent nationalism: all these are referenced, albeit obliquely, as the novel remains first and foremost a great story.
